About Elliot Abramowitz, Ph.D
Elliot Abramowitz has been in practice for almost 40 years. Trained originally in psychoanalytic theory, he has also been trained in a variety of modalities including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and systems theory. He has had specialty training in the treatment of addiction disorders, sexual dysfunctions, and trauma. He has worked with children and adolescents for many years, but currently, his practice is primarily comprised of adults, couples, and families. He also supervises other psychologists, social workers, and interns.
Originally trained as a psychiatric social worker gaining his CSW in 1981, he obtained his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Yeshiva University in 1991. He is Certified as an addiction specialist by the American Psychological Association and is licensed as a Psychologist in the State of New York. The style of his treatment is both didactic, and relational. Often, people will leave feeling that their problems are better or solved and not know how that came about. The reason for this is that he conducts his sessions as though he is sitting in your living room having a social conversation, while all the while employing numerous techniques and methodologies to address the problems at hand. This style has enabled him to work with a very diverse population who come from a multiethnic background. His non-judgmental style enables the people he sees to feel extremely comfortable sharing the most intimate details of their life.
People who come who have had previous experiences in therapy, often remark that this therapy has been more effective.
